After obtaining his high school diploma, Rocco Bonzanigo went on to earn a law degree from Geneva University.
Upon completing law-clerking stints in Geneva and Basel, he was admitted to practice law in Geneva. He then went on to do postgraduate work and earned the degree of Master of Laws (LL.M.) at the University of B. Columbia after submitting a thesis in international tax law (Canadian Taxation of Business and Investment Income of Non-Residents, in European University Papers, Bern u. Frankfurt a. M.). After completing the relevant clerking stint he was admitted as a (civil law) notary in Ticino.
Back in Switzerland he started working in the law office of Ferruccio Bolla, where he later became a full-fledged partner.
His favourite fields of legal endeavour are law in general and with particular attention to its international aspects; advocacy in civil and commercial proceedings; banking, financial and corporate law; tax law, general contract law. He is also particularly active in arbitration, a field in which he has considerable experience – especially in the international arena – gained in both institutional arbitration (at the International Chamber of Commerce – CCI/ICC – in Paris, the Lugano Chamber of Commerce and the Milan National and International Arbitration Chamber) and ad hoc arbitration. Rocco Bonzanigo is a long-standing member of the committee of the Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA), of the ICC’s Commission suisse d’arbitrage of the committee of the ASA group per la Svizzera italiana (GASI) and he has ties with other institutions actively engaged in arbitration. His essay, Il Regolamento d’arbitrato di Lugano: temi scelti, in “Il Ticino e il diritto”, published by the Swiss Jurists Associa¬tion, appeared in 1997.
In addition he used to be for several years the permanent spokesman for Switzerland in the working group on “International Contracts in Industry” of the Trade Development Committee of the United Nations’ Economic Commission for Europe (UN – ECE) headquartered in Geneva.
Familiarity in dealing with diverse legal cultures characterizes the international legal assistance provided by Rocco Bonzanigo, who in his various roles as arbitrator, counsel and consultant operates fluently in Italian, English, French or German. He also has some knowledge of Spanish.
Since 1984 he was co-director and editor of “Repertorio di giurisprudenza patria”, the traditional Italian-language law review published in Switzerand until 2000.
Among his public offices it is worth to mention his function until 2006 as member of the Consiglio della Magistratura (Council) (the independent authority that supervises the operation of the Canton’s judiciary) and the membership in the Consiglio comunale (the legislative body) of the municipality in which he lives.
